So the cruise control has never worked on my car, but its never really been an issue since I never drove for more than a few hours at a time. But I’ve got a road trip from Grand Rapids to Columbus pretty soon and Id love to get it working.

So in a nut shell: you turn on cruise control, the little display says Cruise Control On, and then no matter what you do after nothing ever actually happens. So any ideas?

Electrical issue? Go to a mechanic or maybe a steal *ahem* dealer and see what it could be.

This may sound dumb but are you sure your car has cruise control when new?

Some cars use the same stalk regardless of the fact that the car has cruise control or not

My car has been known to have electrical issues. Ugh, I hope not though.

cable between pedal and actuator/throttle body?

could be the actuator itself.

possibly the switch , might have a broken wire preventing engagement.

Nuts to that. Cruise control is awesome. A real man has others to carry out his orders for him.

What kind of car? I had a Geo Prizm that had the weirdest malfunction. After an accident, the cruise would only work if the outdoor temp was above 80 degrees. I have no idea why, and shortly after that happened I bought another car so I never got to the bottom of it.

Those cruise control systems are all electrical. If the wiring is intact, the problem is likely in the switch, or possibly a sensor or module. I’ve also heard that a burned-out brake lamp bulb can cause it...

Try replacing the switch, maybe the contact to touch to set speed just wore out

I think cruise control is pretty easy to diagnose. I have fixed it before on my 300ZX.

The idea is that you turn on cruise control, the light comes on.

Then you set a coasting speed, another light comes on indicating that it’s actually activated and is keeping your speed.

You’re saying the second light doesn’t come on when you press the “SET” option. That may happen if:

- The set button is broken

- The brake or clutch is depressed

- One of the sensors under the brake or clutch peadl is busted/missing/something, and is reporting the pedal is in when it’s not

I’d inspect those 3 things and see if you can figure out which one is playing up. Maybe get a full service manual for the car (google it!), it might help you with diagnostics.
